A Place of History and Nature

The Chkheri Resort is uniquely situated at the crossroads of Georgia’s Western and Eastern parts, within the Small Caucasus Range and encircled by the Great Caucasus Mountain Range. This strategic location not only provides easy access to diverse natural and cultural attractions but also highlights its historic significance. The region's story spans from the Bronze Age through the epochs of Colchis, Byzantine, Roman, Ottoman, Mongolian, and Persian rule, showcasing a mosaic of influences and heritage.

The Colchida and Ancient Civilizations

Explore the ancient world of Colchis, the legendary kingdom of Medea and the Argonauts, where the myth of the Golden Fleece took root. Rich archaeological findings from Kharagauli and neighboring Vani museums tell stories of a civilization that flourished long before the common era. The exhibits include ancient pottery, gold artifacts, and relicsthat offer a glimpse into the life of a civilization that captivated ancient Greek explorers and inspired timeless legends.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park

Spanning the central part of Georgia, the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is one of the largest protected areas in the country, characterized by its lush, evergreen Colchic forests and alpine meadows. The park’s diverse flora includes beech, hornbeam, oak, chestnut, and coniferous trees, while the fauna boasts over 64 species of mammals, including Caucasian red deer, brown bears, lynx, wolves, and wild boar. Additionally, the park hosts 107 bird species, with several included in Georgia’s Red List of Endangered Species. Towering peaks, crystal-clear rivers, and serene meadows create a breathtaking backdrop for hiking, wildlife observation, and eco-tourism.

Chkheri Fortress

Perched on a mountainside 400 meters above sea level, Chkheri Fortress dates back to the XV-XVII centuries and once stood as a key military outpost controlling the Chkerimela River Valley. Built from cobblestone and rocky material, the fortress features robust outer walls and an inner acropolis, strategically designed to defend against invaders. During the Russo-Ottoman War of 1768-1774, the fortress played a pivotal role when King Solomon I of Imereti and his allies defended it from Ottoman forces, marking a significant victory. The fortress's rugged architecture and panoramic viewsstill echo the tales of battles fought and won, making it an essential stop for history enthusiasts.

Vakhani Fortress

Located on the slope of the northern branch of the Meskheti Range, Vakhani Fortress dates back to the X-XI centuries. A legendary stronghold, it is associated with King David Aghmashenebeli, who is said to have spent a night within its walls. The fortress is steeped in folklore, including tales of betrayal and heroism, and stands as a testament to the region's turbulent history. The legend of “Nasiskhlari” (Bloodshed) recounts the tragic invasion of Omar Khan in 1785, when blood from fierce battles flowed into the Vakhanura River, giving rise to the haunting toponym.

In addition, Ghoresha Village, a quaint and picturesque settlement, serves as a gateway to the Museum Village of the Soviet Period. It is notably the birthplace and home museum of Sergo Orjonikidze, the former Industry Minister of the Soviet Union. The village preserves the authentic atmosphere of the Soviet era, offering visitors an immersive experience into the social and cultural environment of the time, as well as the preserved ambiance of the early 20th century.
